APPLICATION:
Lifting signature bundles and feeding them into binding machines.
The Problem:
Signature bundles were being clamped with air powered clamp attached to air balancer. Clamping device weighed more than signature bundles and was slow and cumbersome.
Alternatives:
Staying with clamps or moving the bundles by manual lifting.
System Chosen:
VH180T (275lb. Capacity) vacuum tube lifting system with an end effector incorporating a secondary gasket consisting of a “floppy skirt” . The combination of this end effector and an extra capacity 7.5 hp motor/compressor compensates for the inherent porosity of the product and allows it to be lifted both quickly and safely. The ErgoSys ceiling mounted rail system allows for easy movement within the work station. All equipment chosen was manufactured by Ergonomic Handling Systems. The components of the system were specifically engineered to provide the most efficient work handling method. The single source responsibility eliminates the mixing of various manufacturers’ components and the resultant field start-up problems.

Operators were reluctant to use clamping devices and they slowed down the speed of the operation.
